With only four days in Edinburgh, you’ll want to make the most of your time and know exactly which places are worth visiting. In Edinburgh in 4 Days: A Complete Itinerary for First-Time Visitors, I’ll take you through the must-see highlights as well as some hidden gems, helping you experience the best of both Old Town and New Town.

This was my first time visiting Edinburgh, and I was completely amazed by its charm, history, and stunning architecture. Traveling with my mom and brother, we set out to explore as much as possible. From the iconic Edinburgh Castle and the colorful Victoria Street to the grand Holyrood Palace, the National Museum of Scotland, and the breathtaking views from Calton Hill.

Edinburgh is a city that stays with you long after you leave, with its mix of medieval streets, grand Georgian buildings, castles, and cobblestone roads. Whether you’re a history lover, a fan of Harry Potter, or just someone who enjoys wandering through atmospheric old streets, this city has something special for you!

3 Day Edinburgh Itinerary Overview

Day 1: Old Town – Cockburn Street, Tron Kirk Market & St. Giles Cathedral.

Day 2: Old Town & New Town – Edinburgh Castle & Shopping in New Town.

Day 3: Old Town – Palace of Holyroodhouse, Victoria Street, Greyfriars Kirkyard & National Museum of Scotland.

Day 4: New Town – Calton Hill & Dean Village.

Day 1: Wandering Through Edinburgh’s Old Town

For me, the best way to explore and get to know a new city is simply by wandering around. So, start your Edinburgh adventure with a stroll through Old Town, where the city’s medieval charm, winding alleys, and centuries-old history come to life! This area is packed with character, from its narrow closes (small alleyways) to its bustling historic streets.

Morning: Cockburn Street & St. Giles Cathedral

Begin your day on Cockburn Street (pronounced “Co-burn”), one of the most photogenic streets in Edinburgh. With its curved road, colorful storefronts, and cozy cafés, it’s the perfect introduction to Old Town’s charm.

Stop by Pie in the Sky, a quirky boutique filled with unique gifts, alternative fashion, unique accessories, funky trinkets, and all things delightfully offbeat! It’s a great spot to pick up a one-of-a-kind souvenir before making your way toward the Royal Mile.

Just a short walk away, you’ll reach the stunning St. Giles’ Cathedral, one of Edinburgh’s most important landmarks. The grand Gothic architecture, intricate stained-glass windows, and historic Thistle Chapel make it well worth a visit. If you have time, consider climbing to the rooftop for fantastic views over the city.

Afternoon: Tron Kirk Market & The Royal Mile

After soaking in the beauty of St. Giles, continue your walk along the Royal Mile, Edinburgh’s most famous street. It stretches from Edinburgh Castle to Holyrood Palace and is lined with historic buildings, traditional shops, and street performers.

Be sure to stop by Tron Kirk Market, a vibrant marketplace inside a historic church building. Here, you’ll find a curated selection of locally made crafts, art, and Scottish souvenirs, perfect for browsing or picking up a meaningful keepsake.

For the rest of the day, continue your aimless wandering through Old Town, getting lost in Edinburgh’s charming alleyways and hidden closes. Sometimes, the best way to experience a city is just to walk, soak in the atmosphere, and stumble upon unexpected surprises!

Start your second day with one of Edinburgh’s most iconic landmarks: Edinburgh Castle. Perched atop Castle Rock, this historic fortress offers breathtaking views over the city and a fascinating journey through Scotland’s past. Be sure to explore highlights like the Crown Jewels of Scotland, the Stone of Destiny, and the Great Hall. If you’re a history lover, take your time wandering through the castle grounds, learning about its sieges, battles, and royal residents.

One O’Clock Gun

Arrive early to beat the crowds and secure a good spot for the One O’Clock Gun, a traditional cannon fire that takes place every day (except Sundays).

After soaking in the history of Edinburgh Castle, head down into New Town, known for its elegant Georgian architecture and fantastic shopping streets. Begin on Princes Street, where you’ll find major brands and department stores, all with a stunning backdrop of Old Town’s skyline.

For something more unique, explore George Street, home to upscale boutiques, designer brands, and stylish cafés. If you’re looking for independent shops and local finds, make your way to Multrees Walk, where luxury brands like Harvey Nichols and Scottish designers showcase their best work.

For a modern shopping experience, visit St James Quarter, Edinburgh’s newest shopping destination. This sleek retail hub features a mix of high-street brands, designer stores, and fantastic dining options, making it a must-visit for shopaholics.

Day 3: Exploring Holyrood Palace, Victoria Street & National Museum of Scotland

Morning: Palace of Holyroodhouse

Start your third day at the magnificent Palace of Holyroodhouse, the official residence of the British monarch in Scotland. The palace is steeped in history, from the lavish State Apartments to the eerie tales of Mary, Queen of Scots. Don’t miss the stunning Holyrood Abbey ruins, an atmospheric site perfect for photos. If you have time, take a stroll through Holyrood Park, where you’ll find scenic walking trails leading up to Arthur’s Seat.

Afternoon: Victoria Street & Greyfriars Kirkyard

After exploring Holyrood, make your way to Victoria Street, one of Edinburgh’s most colorful and iconic streets. The curved road, vibrant storefronts, and independent shops make it a delight to wander through. Stop by some of the unique stores for souvenirs, books, or Scottish-themed gifts.

Just a short walk away, visit Greyfriars Kirkyard, a historic and atmospheric graveyard known for its intriguing tombstones. Fans of Harry Potter will enjoy spotting names that are said to have inspired J.K. Rowling’s characters. Also, don’t forget to see the Greyfriars Bobby statue, dedicated to the loyal Skye Terrier who guarded his owner’s grave for 14 years.

Late Afternoon: National Museum of Scotland

End your day with a visit to the National Museum of Scotland, one of Edinburgh’s top attractions. With exhibits ranging from Scottish history and culture to ancient artifacts and natural history, there’s something for everyone. Be sure to check out Dolly the Sheep, the world’s first cloned mammal, and the impressive Grand Gallery.

The museum is conveniently located near Greyfriars Kirkyard and also has the closest public restrooms. While we did a brief walkthrough, nothing particularly stood out to us, but that doesn’t mean you won’t find something fascinating! If you’re short on time, you don’t have to spend too long here, unless the exhibits interest you, of course. I’d recommend, in the least, stopping in to see the building. It is free entry, after all! I also found this to be a very family-friendly activity, with plenty of interactive exhibits, activities, and things to see for kids!

Viewing Platform at the National Museum of Scotland

The museum has a seventh-floor rooftop viewing platform offering fantastic 360-degree views of Edinburgh. Beware, the entrance to the rooftop is separate from the museum itself!

Opening Hours & Entry Fees

  • 10.00 AM – 5.00 PM daily.
  • Free Entry.

After a full day of exploration, grab a relaxed dinner at one of Edinburgh’s cozy pubs or modern bistros before getting some rest for your final day in the city!

Tomorrow, you’ll soak in stunning views from Calton Hill and wander through the picturesque streets of Dean Village.

Day 4: Calton Hill & Dean Village

Morning: Sunrise at Calton Hill

For breathtaking panoramic views of Edinburgh, start your final day with sunrise at Calton Hill. This iconic spot offers a stunning perspective of the city skyline, with landmarks like Arthur’s Seat, Edinburgh Castle, and the Firth of Forth in the distance. Calton Hill is conveniently located in the city center. The climb isn’t too far or steep, making it much easier to climb than Arthur’s Seat while still offering incredible views! Make sure to explore the historic National Monument, inspired by the Parthenon in Athens, and the Dugald Stewart Monument, a favorite photography spot.

Afternoon: Strolling Through Dean Village

Next, make your way to Dean Village, one of Edinburgh’s most picturesque and tranquil areas. This hidden gem, nestled along the Water of Leith, feels like a step back in time with its charming stone cottages, scenic bridges, and lush greenery. Take a peaceful walk along the Water of Leith Walkway, enjoying the relaxing atmosphere and beautiful surroundings.
