Dreaming of a weekend getaway to Dublin without draining your wallet? You’re in luck! Ireland’s capital offers a rich blend of history, culture, and vibrant city life that you can enjoy on a budget. With careful planning and a few savvy tips, you can experience the best of Dublin in just two days. From historic landmarks to iconic pubs and cozy eateries, here’s your guide to making the most of a frugal weekend in this charming city.

Getting to Dublin on a Budget

I kicked off my trip by flying from Eindhoven Airport to Dublin Airport on a budget airline, snagging a great deal on airfare. Once I landed, I opted for the Dublin Express coach to get to the city center. At just €5 for one way, it was a comfortable and efficient 30-minute ride – a much smarter choice than splurging on a taxi. If you’re looking to save money, I highly recommend this option. Be sure to book in advance to ensure a seat on the coach at your preferred time for getting into the city center.

Where to Stay: Travelodge Plus

For accommodations, I stayed at the Travelodge Plus, which offered excellent value for money. Located in a quiet neighborhood with easy access to major attractions, it was a perfect base for exploring Dublin. The hotel impressed with its clean and comfortable rooms, friendly service, and thoughtful welcome treat—a delicious brownie upon arrival. If you’re looking for affordability without compromising on comfort, this is a great choice.

Day 1: Exploring Dublin’s Historic and Iconic Landmarks

Stop 1: Dublin Castle

Start your Dublin adventure with a visit to the historic Dublin Castle. Entry tickets start at €6 for students & senior, normal adult tickets cost €8. You can choose to take a self-guided audio tour for €8.50 or simply stroll around at your own pace to soak in its grandeur. Don’t miss The Chapel Royal and the serene Dubh Linn Garden – perfect spots for photos and a moment of relaxation amidst the city’s bustle, both free of charge.

Stop 2: Guinness Storehouse

Next, take a leisurely walk to the Guinness Storehouse to save on transport costs. Entry tickets start at €22 and include a self-guided tour through the fascinating history of Ireland’s most famous beer. The highlight? Enjoying a complimentary pint at the Gravity Bar, a rooftop oasis offering panoramic views of Dublin. Don’t forget to check out the gift shop for unique souvenirs!

Dinner: The Saucy Cow

For dinner, head to The Saucy Cow, a vegan fast-food spot known for its mouthwatering plant-based options. Even if you’re not vegan, this place is a must-visit for delicious and affordable eats. My non-vegan/vegetarian friend loved this! I recommend the Garlic Parm Fries and The Dzouble Cheese burger!

Evening Walk: The Temple Bar

No trip to Dublin is complete without a stroll past The Temple Bar in the evening. While drinks here can be pricey, simply soaking in the lively atmosphere and vibrant lights after dark is free and well worth the experience.

Day 2: Culture, Architecture, and Literary Landmarks

Stop 1: Trinity College and Normal People Mural

Begin your second day at Trinity College, home to the famous Book of Kells exhibit. Tickets start at €18, but I decided to skip it since the exhibit was undergoing restoration during my visit. Instead, I enjoyed wandering around the historic campus and spotting a hidden gem: a Normal People mural on College Street near the Trinity College tram stop. Fans of Sally Rooney’s novel or the hit TV series will love snapping a picture of this tribute to Connell and Marianne.

Stop 2: St. Stephen’s Green Shopping Centre and Grafton Street

Next, walk over to St. Stephen’s Green Shopping Centre. Even if shopping isn’t on your agenda, the stunning architecture inside is worth admiring. From there, take a stroll down Grafton Street, one of Dublin’s most famous shopping districts, perfect for people-watching and soaking in the city’s bustling charm.

Dublin offers a delightful mix of history, culture, and charm—all accessible on a budget if you know where to look. With thoughtful planning and smart choices, you can create unforgettable memories without stretching your wallet. From historic landmarks and literary treasures to cozy vegan eateries and iconic pubs, this two-day itinerary gives you a taste of Dublin’s best on a dime.

So pack your bags, follow this guide, and get ready for a weekend in Dublin that’s both budget-friendly and brimming with adventure – proof that the best experiences don’t have to come with a hefty price tag!
