If you’re visiting the Netherlands and want a daytrip that’s full of charm, history, and boutique shopping, a day in Utrecht should be at the top of your list. Forget the tourist-packed streets of Amsterdam – Utrecht offers canals lined with cafes, picturesque bridges, hidden courtyards, and a vibrant mix of shops, making it the perfect spot for a full day of sightseeing, strolling, and shopping. Whether you’re a culture nerd, a photo enthusiast, or just someone looking for authentic Dutch vibes, Utrecht delivers. And in this Utrecht in a day itinerary, I’ll walk you through everything I did on my visit; the must-see sights, the prettiest hidden corners, and my favourite spots to shop and explore your way through the city.

Morning: Historic Sights & Strolling the Canals

Start your day at the Domkerk, Utrecht’s iconic cathedral that dominates the skyline. Climb the tower if you’re feeling ambitious for panoramic views of the city, or simply admire the gothic architecture from the square. Just behind the cathedral, you’ll find the Pandhof van de Dom, a serene courtyard garden perfect for a quiet moment and some early morning photos.

From there, wander along the Lange de Oude Gracht, one of Utrecht’s most charming streets. The canal here is lined with wharf cellars, boutique cafes, and historic buildings, making it ideal for a slow stroll and soaking up the atmosphere. Don’t miss the Pandhof Sinte Marie, another tucked-away courtyard with beautiful gardens and a peaceful vibe. It’s a little hidden gem that feels like stepping back in time.

Midday: Iconic Statues & Photo Opportunities

No visit to Utrecht is complete without stopping by the Statue of Dick Bruna & Nijntje (Miffy). This playful tribute to the creator of the world-famous bunny is a fun photo stop, especially if you’re visiting with kids or just want a quirky shot for your Instagram. While you’re in the area, take a moment to snap photos along the canals, the combination of bridges, historic buildings, and reflections in the water makes Utrecht incredibly photogenic.

Afternoon: Shopping & Local Finds

After sightseeing, it’s time to explore Utrecht’s fantastic shopping scene. There’s a little bit of everything here, from small boutiques to beloved local chains. Here are some of my favorite shops in Utrecht that are perfect to hit during your day trip – whether you’re hunting for unique gifts, vintage clothes, or vinyl treasures.

It’s A Present

This gift shop is an absolute vibe. Located right along one of Utrecht’s canals, it’s Instagram famous for its swing over the water. Yes, you can actually sit on a swing above the canal here! Inside, you’ll find all kinds of weird and wonderful items: funny birthday cards, board games, cat- or dog-themed decorations, quirky home decor, and even plant-inspired gifts. During holidays, they stock seasonal and holiday items too. I never leave empty-handed.

  • Location: Lijnmarkt 16, Utrecht
  • Why go: Perfect for souvenirs, gifts, and aesthetic photo op on the swing above the canal.

Broese Boekverkopers

A staple for book lovers, Broese is a large, well-loved bookstore on the Oudegracht. They have two floors filled with Dutch and international literature, a strong non-fiction and fiction section, and even a big music corner. They also run a brasserie in the store, so you can grab a drink or snack while browsing.

  • Address: Oudegracht 112b, Utrecht
  • Why go: Mix of new and second-hand books, comfy browsing, and a cozy café inside.

BLACKFISH

BLACKFISH is a retro/vintage boutique with serious personality. On the ground floor you’ll find bright, colorful retro clothing, accessories, and jewelry. Head downstairs to the basement for vintage finds, and don’t miss their “Mystique” section – full of incense, tarot cards, occult books, magical trinkets, and candles. The space even has a bit of a laid-back, magical-shop feel.

  • Address: Voorstraat 6, Utrecht
  • Why go: For vintage fashion lovers or anyone who likes quirky, mystical finds.

Plato Record Store

Record nerds, rejoice: Plato is a must! This store sells new and used vinyl, CDs, and DVDs, and they often host live in-store gigs, because there’s a real stage inside. It’s a classic spot that’s been a part of Utrecht’s music scene for years.

  • Address: Voorstraat 19, Utrecht
  • Why go: New and second‑hand records, rare finds, and music merch.
