London is famous for its skyline, but most viewpoints charge steep entry fees (£30+ for The Shard, for example). Luckily, there are two incredible free London viewpoints in London that still deliver the wow factor: The Lookout and The Garden at 120. I visited both back-to-back on my last trip with a friend (her first time seeing the London skyline!) and can honestly say they’re hidden gems more people should know about.
The Lookout

Located in the City of London, The Lookout is a modern rooftop space inside a sleek skyscraper. It has a polished, glassy vibe, and because it’s higher up than The Garden at 120, you get a wider view of the skyline.
Important: you need to pre-book a free ticket online to get in. It’s easy and quick to do, but don’t forget as you won’t be allowed up without one.
From here, you’ll spot some of London’s most iconic buildings up close; the Gherkin, Cheesegrater, Walkie Talkie, and beyond. It’s one of the highest viewpoints in London, so there aren’t any other skyscrapers blocking your view. The only downside is that it’s not a full 360° experience, as one side of the building isn’t accessible with the glass viewing panels.
Still, it’s perfect for photos, and it feels like a very sleek introduction to London’s skyline!

The Garden at 120
Just a 5-minute walk from The Lookout, The Garden at 120 is completely different in vibe. This is an open-air rooftop garden on top of an office building, no tickets, no booking, just walk straight in.

When I went in late July (peak tourist season) around noon, I expected it to be packed. But surprisingly, there was no queue at all. Most of the people up there were office workers enjoying their lunch break. That’s part of the charm: it doesn’t feel touristy yet.
The garden itself has greenery, benches, and 360° views of London. Because it’s lower down than The Lookout, you don’t see as far into the distance, but you do get a much better view of nearby landmarks like the Tower of London.
Best part? You’re allowed to bring your own food. We grabbed a classic M&S meal deal and had lunch with a skyline view, the ultimate budget-friendly break from sightseeing. Honestly, it felt like a hidden gem picnic spot!
That said, this one really shines in summer or on dry days. I probably wouldn’t recommend it in winter or rain since it’s open-air.

Which One Should You Choose?
- The Lookout = higher, sleeker, better for photos of London’s iconic skyscrapers.
- The Garden at 120 = more relaxed, 360° views, picnic-friendly, easier access.
Honestly, if you have the time, do both. They’re right next to each other, and the views are different enough to make each worth it.
Tips for Visiting Free London Viewpoints
- Best times: Sunset is stunning at both, but also the busiest. If you prefer quiet, go earlier in the day.
- Booking: The Lookout requires a free online ticket. The Garden at 120 doesn’t.
- Food & drinks: Grab a meal deal or takeaway coffee to enjoy at The Garden at 120.
- Security: Both have bag checks before entering, but it’s quick.
- Weather: Garden at 120 is best in good weather since it’s fully outdoors.
If you’re looking for the best free rooftop views in London, don’t waste your money on pricey observation decks, check out The Lookout and The Garden at 120 instead!
