Finding a hotel in Budapest isn’t difficult, but finding one that feels luxurious without completely blowing your budget? That’s a little harder. During my winter city break to Budapest, my brother and I decided to treat ourselves to one night at Hotel Oktogon Haggenmacher Budapest before moving to our hostel for the remainder of the trip. And honestly? It turned out to be one of the best decisions we made.

As someone who usually travels on a budget, I’m always careful about spending more on accommodation. I’d much rather save that money for sightseeing and good food. But Budapest offers such great value compared to many other European capitals that splurging on a beautiful hotel suddenly becomes much more affordable. After one night here, I completely understood why this hotel receives such glowing reviews. If you’re considering staying at Hotel Oktogon Haggenmacher Budapest, here’s exactly what you can expect!

First Impressions & Location

The moment we stepped inside Hotel Oktogon Haggenmacher, I knew we’d made the right choice. The lobby is absolutely gorgeous and immediately gives the impression that you’re staying somewhere far more expensive than it actually is. With its elegant décor, stylish lighting, and boutique hotel atmosphere, it feels luxurious from the very first moment.

The friendly welcome from reception only added to that first impression. Every member of staff we interacted with during our stay was warm, professional, and genuinely welcoming, something that always makes a hotel experience feel that little bit more special.

The location is another huge plus. Situated right on Oktogon Square, the hotel is perfectly placed for exploring Budapest. Metro and tram stops are only a short walk away, making it incredibly easy to reach every corner of the city. We found ourselves walking to many attractions, including the beautiful Hungarian State Opera House, Andrássy Avenue, and Fashion Street, while public transport made getting elsewhere effortless.

Although it’s located in the heart of the city, the hotel itself felt surprisingly peaceful, making it a lovely place to return to after a busy day of sightseeing.

Our Superior Twin Room

We booked a Superior Twin Room, and I honestly couldn’t have asked for more. The room felt spacious, modern, and spotlessly clean. One of my favourite features was the gorgeous slanted skylight window, which could actually be opened. Looking out over the rooftops of Budapest from bed gave the room such a unique character and made the stay feel that little bit more special.

The beds were incredibly comfortable, exactly what we needed after spending hours exploring the city in freezing January temperatures. The room also included everything you’d expect for a comfortable city break, with plenty of storage space, a desk, tea and coffee facilities, a television, and reliable Wi-Fi.

The bathroom deserves a special mention too. It was modern, beautifully designed, and featured a wonderfully luxurious rainfall shower that felt amazing after walking around Budapest all day in the snow.

Everything felt fresh, well maintained, and thoughtfully designed, creating the perfect balance between comfort and boutique-style luxury!

Breakfast (The Unexpected Highlight!)

If there’s one thing I wasn’t expecting to rave about, it was the breakfast… But wow!

Hotel breakfasts can sometimes feel repetitive, but this buffet genuinely impressed me. There was an incredible variety of fresh pastries, Hungarian specialties, fruit, cereals, breads, cheeses, cold cuts, yoghurts, and hot breakfast options, including everything you’d expect from a full English breakfast.

One feature that immediately caught my attention was the automatic pancake machine. Watching fresh pancakes being made right in front of you somehow made breakfast even more fun.

And then there was the champagne. Yes, you read that correctly. If you’ve ever dreamed of starting your sightseeing day with a glass of bubbly before 10 AM, Hotel Oktogon Haggenmacher has you covered. Not something I expected from a hotel in this price range, but definitely a memorable touch. I rarely get excited about hotel breakfasts, but this one genuinely exceeded my expectations!

Facilities

Although we only stayed for one night, the hotel offers a few extra facilities that are worth mentioning.

Guests have access to a modern gym as well as a sauna, perfect if you’re staying a little longer and want to unwind after a day of exploring Budapest. Unfortunately, our itinerary was packed from morning until evening, so we didn’t get the chance to use either facility. Still, it’s always nice knowing those amenities are available, especially during a winter city break.

Price: Was It Worth It?

We paid €107 for one night in a Superior Twin Room, in January booked around 1 or 2 months in advance. Of course, hotel prices fluctuate depending on the season and availability, but I genuinely thought the value for money was excellent.

Coming from the Netherlands, where boutique hotels like this often cost significantly more, Hotel Oktogon Haggenmacher felt like a little slice of luxury without the luxury price tag. Even if you’re normally a budget traveller like me, I think this is one of those hotels that’s absolutely worth spending a little extra on.

Between the stylish interiors, fantastic breakfast, central location, friendly staff, and comfortable rooms, I never once felt like we’d overpaid.

Who Would I Recommend This Hotel To?

I think Hotel Oktogon Haggenmacher Budapest is a fantastic choice for:

✔️ First-time visitors to Budapest

✔️ Couples looking for a romantic city break

✔️ Friends exploring Budapest together

✔️ Anyone wanting a boutique hotel experience without paying five-star prices

✔️ Travellers who appreciate a great hotel breakfast

If you’re backpacking on the absolute lowest budget, there are of course cheaper options available. But if you have a little extra room in your budget and want to make your city break feel just that bit more special, I think this hotel is well worth considering!

Final Verdict of Hotel Oktogon Haggenmacher Budapest

Would I stay at Hotel Oktogon Haggenmacher Budapest again? Absolutely! From the beautiful boutique-style interiors and incredibly friendly staff to the comfortable rooms, luxurious shower, fantastic breakfast, and unbeatable location, this hotel exceeded my expectations in almost every way.

It’s one of those places that manages to feel luxurious without being pretentious, making it accessible even for travellers who don’t usually splurge on accommodation. For me, it struck the perfect balance between comfort, style, and value for money, and I’d happily book it again on my next visit to Budapest.
